8-Minute-No-Breach

A little EWD perk!

When using an Electronic Work Diary (EWD), truck drivers can get the advantage of using the 8-minute-tolerance to switch to rest if they haven't already done so. This means that if by the time they had to switch to rest they didn't, they can still start their rest within 8 minutes of getting in the breach without a breach getting recorded in their EWD.

In this post we'd like to shed the light on:

  • In what periods 8-min tolerance could be used.

  • How the 8-min tolerance could be used safely.

  • How the timeline view displays a breach of 8 minutes.

  • Why There is 8 minutes tolerance in EWD.

Let's get into it:

  1. In what periods 8-min tolerance could be used?

In the WORK periods of 24 hours or less only. Namely:

  1. How the 8-min tolerance could be used safely without a breach recorded?

periods of work and rest in the 24 hours and less periods are calculated in a cumulative way, so the 8-min tolerance follows the same cumulative way. Ideally, the driver must not accumulate 8 minutes of extra work in every period because this will lead to a breach being recorded. This is best explained in the below illustration where the ideal situation and the 8-minute extra work situation could be compared: (tap on picture to view it in full screen - downloadable version at the bottom )

  1. Why There is 8 minutes tolerance in EWD?

The reason that it reflects in this way is the EWD Compliance Policy issued by NHVR that says:

  • A breach of 8 minutes or less do not constitute a breach.

  1. How the timeline view displays a breach of 8 minutes?

On the driver's timeline, Safee app notifies the driver that the rest hasn't started on time, and that the driver has 8 minutes to switch to rest without a breach recorded. If the driver made the switch before the 8 minutes lapse, no breach line indicator is drawn. Otherwise, the breach line indicator lights up at the end of the 8 minutes tolerance, as shown in this video (tap to view in full screen)

Conclusion:

The 8-minute is particularly helpful in cases where you're a few minutes away from your next stop. However, you need to take care not to use more than once in a 24-hour period, and not cut any subsequent rest short.
